Private Voice Instruction

Study privately with Lisa Matsko Hamilton, one of the premiere South Bay voice instructors. Music theatre, pop, and classical styles. Select songs from our extensive music library. New technology!  All warm-ups and accompaniments are now recorded directly onto CD! Current students are performing on Broadway and in national tours of shows such as Mary Poppins, 13, Grease, Big River, Little Women, Ragtime, The Lion King, 42nd Street, Rent, Miss Saigon, and Phantom of the Opera. Other students have graduated from such prestigious arts programs as those at UCLA, University of Michigan, Boston Conservatory, NYU, Julliard, AMDA , UCI, Yale and Northwestern. Lisa Matsko Hamilton received her MFA in Music Theatre at the University of California, Irvine, and has also studied at the University of Redlands and Syracuse University.

Summer Music Theatre Workshops

ADVANCED MUSIC THEATRE AUDITION WORKSHOP

Tuesdays, June 10 - July 29, 7:00 - 10:00 pm, $375

Nine sessions focusing on audition and cabaret material for the advanced performer. Students bring in songs-in-progress to work one-on-one with star quality guest instructors in several of the class sessions.
Prerequisite: Music Theatre Audition Workshop or by audition.

MUSIC THEATRE AUDITION WORKSHOP

Saturdays, June 21 - July 26, 1:00 - 3:30 pm or
Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 24 - July 31, 3:00 - 4:30 pm
Either six-week class, $275

Challenging and fun, these workshops are performance based and include singing, dancing and acting.  Each time you take the class, you build your audition repertoire and increase your comfort level at auditions.  Great for new-comers and a good brush-up for experienced pros.

All three summer classes come together for a mock-audition showcase on Saturday, August 2.

Artist in Residence Auditions

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE WORKSHOP

With University of Michigan’s Music Theatre Professor BRENT WAGNER, chairman of the renowned Musical Theatre department at the University of Michigan, one of the nation’s top theatre training programs. He also founded the Music Theatre training program at Syracuse University and has directed musicals and revues throughout the U.S. and Canada, from off-Broadway to the Banff Center of Fine Arts in Canada. Professor Wagner is a recipient of the Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. Don’t miss this opportunity to study with the Dean of American Musical Theatre training!

The 2008 Workshop:
Friday, May 23, 6 - 10 pm
Saturday, May 24, 10 am - 6 pm
Sunday, May 25, 10 am - 6 pm
(Memorial Day weekend)

Brent Wagner will work with students on solo numbers in this intensive, three-day music theatre workshop which culminates in a presentation of classwork for an invited audience.

Ages: High school students (Others by special permission)
Maximum enrollment: 18 students.
Eligibility: All students must audition for the workshop.
Scholarships: Full and partial scholarships are available by the Professional Arts Education Center, a non-profit corporation. Scholarship distribution will be determined by the Feb. 23 audition or by VHS tape or DVD submission.
Three-day tuition: $375
Notification: All applicants accepted into the workshop will be notified by March 31.
Payment: A $125 holding deposit is required at the time of audition. If accepted into the workshop, an additional $125 non-refundable deposit is due by April 11. The remaining $125 tuition is due by May 2.

The Audition:
Saturday, Feb 23, 2008

Audition requirements:
• Call the Professional School for the Arts for an audition appointment time. (310) 328-7664
• Prepare one song that is no longer than 1-1/2 minutes. An accompanist will be provided. Applicants may bring their own accompanist. No one will be permitted to sing without piano accompaniment. Please bring a copy of the song in the key in which you will sing. (While live auditions are strongly encouraged, auditions by DVD (preferred) or VHS tape will be accepted. See below for specific instructions.)

• Prepare a short monologue from a full-length play written after 1940, memorized and in context. Students should make every effort to read the entire play, even if it is taken from a monologue book. The monologue should be no longer than 1-1/2 minutes.

• In addition, bring a photograph and a resume including details of your training and/or experience in music, dance and drama.

• If requesting a scholarship, please attach a brief paragraph describing why you need and deserve one.

DVD/VHS Tape Instructions:
A live audition is strongly recommended. If you are unable to audition in person, you may submit a DVD/VHS tape. For priority consideration, recordings must be received by March 7, 2008. Late applications (recorded auditions only) may be accepted after March 7 if openings remain. Include all of the audition requirements listed above.
Additionally:
• Prepare two (not one) contrasting songs: a ballad and an up-tempo.
• Make sure your face is clearly visible and the background simple and uncluttered.
• Place the microphone close to you and away from the piano. Make sure the piano is in tune.
• Announce your name and the name of each selection and/or monologue.
After you finish, take a moment to speak a little about your background, your experiences in music theatre, and which, if any, musical instruments you play competently.

Non-Participating Observers:
Up to 7 non-participating observers will be allowed. (A great learning experience for teachers and others in the performing arts!) The cost for each observer is $175.

Summer Conservatory 2008

The Professional School for the Arts is the only place to be this summer for top-rate workshops in the arts. A staff of trained professionals is on hand to give personal and individual attention to students of all ages.  Enjoy a complete range of classes in a disciplined and enjoyable atmosphere. The program is affordable and flexible, and is designed to meet your needs.

The 6-week session runs June 23 - Aug. 2.

Summer dance classes at PSA are aimed at students 11 years old and up. Theatre Dance class is Dancing through the Decades: a different dance style from a different decade each week.

MAT PILATES FOR KIDS - $60
Thursdays, 12:30-1:15 pm.
Lengthen and strengthen! A great introduction to today’s most popular fitness craze. Everybody’s doin’ it!

ACTING & IMPROV - $395
Mondays/Wednesdays, 1:30-4:30 pm.
For students 11-18, this not-to-be missed course combines the sharpness of theatrical improvisation with acting fundamentals. Learn the secrets to successful acting techniques, cold reading and scene study. Participants perform in a combined showcase on Aug. 2 for an invited audience.
(Or take just the Acting from 2:30 to 4:30 for $295)

For students 10-18 years old, this insightful workshop prepares the performer for auditioning for the Musical Theatre. Audition songs learned are performed in an
audition showcase on Aug. 2 for an invited audience.

June 27 -- ON-CAMERA ACTING with KEN JAMES
New to PSA, acting coach and career guide Ken James brings his on-camera acting course, featuring commercial and television acting techniques as well as fun with improvisation. Ken teaches you how to approach the industry so you feel comfortable and at ease. He teaches visualization, commercial styles, script interpretation, cold readings, reading between the lines, as well as understanding the lingo and the language of auditions. Get in front of the camera this summer!

July 11 -- SAY "HELLO" TO BYE BYE BIRDIE with KAREN NOWICKI
Put on a happy face (and your dancin’ shoes) for this Bye Bye Birdie audition prep class. Karen Nowicki, the Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities’ choreographer, teaches combinations from their September show, giving class members a leg up on the audition process. (Dance attire required for this class.)

July 25 -- MUSIC THEATRE PERFORMANCE with DANNY GURWIN
If your friends could see you now: Getting tips on your audition songs from Broadway charmer Danny Gurwin! He was Laurie opposite Sutton Foster’s Jo in Little Women––you can hear him on the original cast recording!––and in Urinetown on Broadway; he was in the national tour of The Full Monty and in the NYC Opera and Kennedy Center’s production of A Little Night Music; he’s a graduate of the University of Michigan Musical Theatre program; he’s currently on the Musical Theatre faculty of AMDA in Los Angeles; and he’s at PSA for one day only this summer!
